Fixing A Wire Poke

wire poke, Fixing A Wire Poke, Cooper & Misner Orthodontics

Wire pokes are common for anyone in braces to experience. While they can be inconvenient, there are a couple of home remedies you can try!  Please note, it is important to contact our office when you have a wire that is loose, shifting, and/or poking your cheek!

The easiest fix is using wax. We recommend first brushing your teeth thoroughly to ensure that the wire is clean and clear of any food. After brushing, dry the area of irritation so that the wax will be applied on a dry wire. Take a small piece of wax and roll it into a ball (about the size of a pea), then place it on the tip of the wire that is causing irritation.

If you are unable to soothe the irritation with wax, another option is to use nail clippers to clip the wire. Be sure to sanitize the nail clippers first and (if possible) have someone help you clip the wire.

If our office is open, please call us and we can schedule you for a quick appointment to take care of the wire poke for you either by clipping the wire or placing a new one!
