Eat “this” not “that”

, Eat “this” not “that”, Cooper & Misner Orthodontics

While undergoing Orthodontic treatment, it is imperative to take excellent care of your teeth. In order to achieve optimal results, daily oral health practices can help you reach your goal of a beautiful smile.

The AAO recommends to ideally brush after every meal or snack throughout the day, and a minimum of twice a day. If brushing your teeth is not possible after every meal or snack, simply rinsing with water is better than doing nothing. Then, floss your teeth at least once a day, and more often when needed.

Finally, eat soft foods that help protect your Orthodontic appliances from breaking. Below is a list of some simple “swaps” you can make to avoid breaking your Orthodontic appliance while still enjoying food during treatment!

Pancakes NOT Bagels

Soft tortillas NOT Hard taco shells/Crunchy chips

Soft cooked chicken NOT Beef Jerky

Ice cream NOT Ice

Applesauce NOT Apples

Creamy Peanut Butter NOT Crunchy Peanut Butter

Pudding or Yogurt NOT Gummy foods or caramels

It is important to remember that your oral health is the most important thing to consider. Orthodontic treatment does not last forever, but the way you care for your teeth will have a lasting impact on your smile for life. Making appropriate oral health choices now may not seem like a lot, but they quickly add up to achieve that beautiful smile!
